Friday, April 4. Today I go to see Paul Collomb. I had hoped to visit him when Jed was here but he had planned a trip to Marrakesh, an actual vacation as he has been suffering from severe vertigo. Then we planned a visit for last Wednesday but he called me on the weekend to say his foot and his leg were terribly swollen, the doctor had come on Saturday and told him to go to the hospital/clinic on Monday. So he wanted to put off our visit.
Then he called me Monday afternoon, and he was practically euphoric. "C'est le nouveau Paul," he said. Apparently, nothing was seriously wrong. I think he was afraid that the doctor would tell him to stay off his feet but, in fact, the doctor said walking is the best thing he could do. This was great news for someone who walks from his apartment to his studio every day and then climbs the stairs to the studio on the fourth (French) floor! So we rescheduled our visit for today. All in all he's feeling much better. The vertigo has improved, and spring is here. :)
I simply love visiting him. Today he tells me about his wife, Suzanne, who died in 1995 of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He has me look through a portfolio of lithographs to choose one to take home with me. He is a dear, dear man.
