The Wonderful World of French Grammar

Tuesday, March 18. Meet Daniele and JingJing for lunch at Alliance Francaise. An Italian friend of Daniele, also named Daniele (hereafter Daniele2) is also there. It turns out he has just completed the MBA program with INSEAD (an international business school with campuses in Fontainbleau and Singapore, affiliated with Wharton at U.Penn) and is going to work for Credit Suisse in London! In the meantime, he's brushing up his French at the AF. Of course, he also speaks English.

JingJing is going back to China in April and will be living in Singapore. When I tell her that I'm going to be teaching English in Hunan Province, she says that (in her opinion) it is the most beautiful part of China. I help Daniele with the English version of his CV, then it's time for class.

French Grammar. This is quite a different experience than my classes last fall. Because I was then taking General French at a fairly high level, the classes were small and quite personal. This is a much bigger class (18 students, only two of whom are of the male persuasion!) and teaching is more formalized. Still, I think I will get a lot out of it. Of course, this is week 7 of an 8-week cycle of grammar so after these two weeks, maybe I will start again with week 1. This week we are working on Indirect Discourse. The classroom is on the very top floor (8th French or 9th US) of the AF building on rue de Fleurus (where Gertrude Stein used to live), around the corner from the other building on Boulevard Raspail. The elevator goes only to the 7th floor, then you take the stairs to the 8th. Very little in Paris is handicapped-accessible.

Afternoon snack: bichon citron. This is akin to a chausson aux pommes but with a lemony-cream filling inside. I'm addicted to them! Fortunately, I've only seen them in the patisserie near the Alliance Francaise. :)

Dany (landlord) comes by this evening to bring some things for the apartment. More later.
