Today I decide to take the Metro to school so again I walk down to Ile de la Cite and through the Marche aux Fleurs. There is a plant that catches my eye; when I ask it's name, la vendeuse tells me Veronique. It is a succulent, sedum-like plant although somewhat bushy with lovely purple blooms. It probably will turn out not to be hardy in New England, malheureusement.
I get off the Metro at Saint Placide and start down the r. Notre-Dame-des-Champs, where I spot all in a row un traitteur, une boulangerie/patisserie and another shop which is a combination of all three. I have time so spend a few minutes looking in each one, and this is what I have been searching for. All my favorite foods in one spot that's virtually at the entrance to the Metro! So now I know what I'll be having for dinner when I don't go out, at least on the three days that I have classes at AF.
In the elevator going up to the fifth floor, I meet a lovely young woman from New York who is just beginning the American Graduate School in International Relations and Diplomacy which is based at the AF. She graduated from Drexel four years ago.
There is a new student in our class, another American named Zannah (for Suzannah). She is about to begin a graduate program in French History at L'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Social. She's 26 and has been teaching English (actually as an assistant to a teacher) in a French school. All these smart young women! Wish I could have had my sh-- together at their age.
In class today, we are working on Les Sentiments. Lots of new vocabulary.
After class, I pop into each of the aforementioned food shops and make purchases at all three: les betraves, la macedoine, le celeri remoulade, une tranche d'une terrine au citron vert, un petit fromage (Rocamadour), une petite baguette, un macaron praline, un bichon au citron, une tarte au saumon. Ok, so I went a little crazy here but I have food for tonight and part of the weekend!
