Saturday, October 13. Today, I do nothing, absolutely nothing, during the day except rest, read, nap, look up some train schedules on line, send a few emails and write a little (tres peu). I was so tired last night, I went straight to bed without eating anything for "dinner" even though I had a little salmon and green beans in the frigo. I feel a little headachy and sore, as though I could be coming down with a cold so it's definitely a day off. Talk to Eleanor in the afternoon.
Later, Jay and Richard call. We meet at Mariage Freres (on r. du Bourg-Tibourg) at 5 p.m. for tea along with another friend, Alexandre. I have Vanille Imperiale, which turns out to be the best tea I've ever had. I drink the entire pot! Scones with butter and jam of course. I feel completely revived after tea. Maybe the British are onto something. The tearoom is swamped as are the streets with British rugby fans here for the game tonight.
Tonight it's France v. England in the semi-finals. Apparently the match is not being broadcast in the Place de l'Hotel de Ville "for reasons of security." Don't know what that means. It is, however, being broadcast outdoors at Champs de Mars.
Marly at the Louvre. Richard and Jay swing by my apt at 8:30 p.m. and we walk to the Louvre and the Cafe Marly. Vanina and Ursuline meet us there for drinks. Vanina arrives on her bike! I love this woman; she bikes all over Paris. Ursuline is a friend of Jay's and was for almost 20 years the "vedette" of the Paradis Latin, a famous cabaret in the Latin Quarter. She's American but got to Paris by way of the Broadway show, Bubbling Brown Sugar, which came to France on tour. She was offered singing jobs here and has been in Paris ever since. At about 10:15, we leave to walk through the park of the Palais Royal to the r. Vivienne to have dinner at:
Le Grand Colbert. This restaurant was the site of Diane Keaton's 50th birthday party in the film "Something's Gotta Give." Maybe I could have my 60th birthday party here. :) A lovely place, not at all stuffy, and with reasonably priced food. Not at all what I expected. Richard, Jay, Ursuline and I have a wonderful dinner (I have Salade des Artichaux and Assiette Vegetarienne, then Ile Flotante for dessert!) The conversation is so good that suddenly it's 1 a.m. We put Ursuline in a cab and walk home through the deserted streets that were so lively only a few hours earlier. Thank you, Jay and Richard for an evening to remember.
Rugby Update: England 14, France 9 (I ask our waiter in the restaurant for the outcome of the game). So it's all over for Les Bleus. For someone who's not a sports fan, I'm feeling very sad.
Pedometer: 6,947 (not bad considering I stayed home all day). Weather chilly and overcast.
