Last Day of September (Fourth Sunday in Paris)

Sunday, September 30. I'm up early today and, when I open my curtains, I see the "sunrise" (or what passes for one in the city). The eastern sky is pale blue and there are pink streaky clouds on the horizon (the "horizon" being formed by the tops of the buildings en face). I can actually peer part of the way down the r. de Verrerie so it isn't completely ridiculous to refer to it as the horizon.

I get a text message from Eleanor (about 12:30 a.m. her time!) saying "Smells like winter here and I miss you." When I respond right away, I get another one, asking me what time church starts! how funny is that. :)

Today, I go again to the market at Place de la Bastille, but this time I'm prepared. I walk around once taking pictures, then go back and fill up my shopping trolley with fruit (chantarais melon, pears, apples, and a mango), a bottle of wine, a piece of onion tart, pasta salad, salade piementoise, cheese, bread and some tapenade. My trolley must weigh about 50 pounds, and I wheel it home via the metro (of course, in the metro, I have to carry it up and down numerous flights of stairs!). Then, it's up the 63 stairs to my apartment. I feel very French! :)

I've been worried about being able to finish Le Misanthrope before I see the play next Friday as it is not easy reading but yesterday I found a terrific study aid. The entire play translated into English, online! So I read a passage first in English, then in French and work out any questions I have about the French. Once I'm done with that part (all 5 acts!), I'll go back and read it from start to finish in French. Voila!

I'm also reading a French murder mystery, La Cite des Dogues, by Jean Failler (from Quimper)which I can read easily. Even though there are words I don't know on every page, I can still understand the meaning (heck, there are even one or two English words I don't know, but that doesn't stop me from reading English!).

Another Match de Rugby today (I can always tell by the noise coming from the Place de l'Hotel de Ville) but this one in the afternoon: France 64 Georgia 7.

I'm covering my "frigo" with magnets. So far, I have Chagall, Niki de Sainte Phalle, Picasso and a French poster reproduction (Tournee du Chat Noir)

Pedometer: 2,720 (that's with taking the metro both ways to the market). Mostly sunny and warm today.
